To choose your engagement ring, there are essentially three components that you need to decide on. The engagement ring components are:

• The Diamonds;
• What metal to choose; and
• The engagement ring design.

Which Metal to Choose for Engagement Rings

Next, you need to consider the quality of the Metal used in the construction of engagement rings.

Most Engagement Rings are made in either Gold or Platinum. The Gold can be 18kt, 14kt or 9kt and be either white, yellow and/or rose gold.

18kt gold, whether it is white, yellow or rose gold is the best and preferred choice for Gold Engagement Rings followed, by 14kt.

Four important things to look for when choosing your Engagement Ring Design

How do I choose my engagement ring design? - After 30 years of custom making engagement rings and helping people select engagement rings, I'd like to think that I had the answer to this question - but I don't.

Explaining how people choose an engagement ring design is a bit like explaining how people select a baby's name. You can't mathematically or scientifically analyse how you made your final decision - it's simply a matter of personal preference.

However, although the final choice of your engagement ring design is a mater of individual preference I can help you by providing useful engagement ring tips and by pointing out some pitfalls in engagement ring design.

This article deals with the 4 important things that you should look for when choosing your engagement ring design.

An Engagement Ring has to do 4 things:

1. It has to be easy and practical to wear
2. It has to withstand everyday wear
3. It has to hold its gemstones securely
4. It has to look good

If an engagement ring lacks any of these properties it is not of good design and is not the Engagement Ring for you.

1. Easy and practical to wear

What is easy and practical depends on your lifestyle. The higher the setting of the diamond or gemstone in your engagement ring, the more often it will catch on things. If you work behind a desk all day you may be able to wear a very high set ring. On the other hand, if you are a preschool teacher you will have to wear a safe ring that won't get caught.

2. Withstanding everyday wear

Your engagement ring must withstand constant every day wear. Some environments are more destructive to engagement rings and jewelry than others. For example, a work area near a factory that uses abrasives is bad news for jewelry. Surprisingly one of the worst places for jewelry is an office where you use a lot of paper. Paper is mildly abrasive, and constant daily exposure to that type of environment will wear your jewelry over the years. So if you are in an environment where your engagement ring is likely to wear, a heavier style will last longer, and cause you less worry. However, "heavy" doesn't necessarily have to mean wider, it just means a sturdy, strong shank/band should be used. If you prefer finer more delicate styles, you can consider Platinum, as platinum will out wear gold many times over.

3. Holding gemstones securely

Your engagement ring must hold your gemstones securely. The following is a general guide for engagement ring gemstone settings:

1. 6 prongs (claws) are best, though a good secure 4 prong is also good; See prong engagement rings
2. A bezel (rub over) setting is safer than a prong setting. See bezel engagement rings.
3. A heavier setting is stronger than a light setting; and
4. A lower setting is less likely to be damaged than a higher setting
